Inspiration
Most of the expenses apps track personal expenses and do weekly reviews. We think there is a lack of motivation to save more since the period they track has passed. As a result, we decide to create an expense app where the user can know their spending in the current budgeting period. We observed that students, in particular, are experiencing multiple factors of stress for the first time. Whether it is from academic work or a change of environment. However, we realized that one of the most fundamental stress factors that all students are experiencing is in regards to their financial situations. With heavy tuition and expensive rent in downtown Toronto, we hope to create an app that will let students manage their expenses better. With an emphasis on budget control, we believe that students will have a clearer image of their expense behavior and thus make adjustments according to their past data. This will not only alleviate their stress on their financial situation but also encourage them to save more and plan their monthly expenses more often.
What it does
The app is an expense app that shows how much of the budget is being used. Users can add and view transactions like a standard expenses app. An emphasis has been made on the budget system as users will have a clear and simple graph that tells them about their current budget and expenses.
How we built it
We built the app using flutter and dart. We used multiple Stateful objects that pass data around by routing to different pages.
Challenges we ran into
Learning app development from scratch. To keep track of multiple data at once was also a key factor that we needed to keep an eye on.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It's a working app!!!!!! It has a clear and simple UI that our users can easily follow through, therefore encouraging them to keep track of their expenses.
What we learned
As Flutter is a program that works around states and rerouting pages and data, we learned a lot about keeping consistent data types, having consistent language usage, and how to build a strong and durable framework.
What's next for BudgetIt
We hope that we can expand it further, directing its use towards students to help them budget. Adding small investment categories and suggesting while giving personalized advice would be an ideal addition to our project.
