Inspiration
This hack was inspired by Duolingo and Tamagotchi. Budgitto is intended to act similarly to Duo in pressuring the user into developing good habits via push notifications.
How it works
Budgeting with Budgitto is an app for managing your personal finances. Budgitto pressures you into meeting your budgeting goals, rewarding you when you do so. When you meet you monthly budget, you are rewarded with budget coins, which can be used to buy furniture for Budgitto. If you do not stick to the budget, the IRS will begin repossessing Budgitto's furniture and he will go berserk! The gamification of something intimidating like personal finance is intended to make it a more enjoyable experience for the user.
How we built it
We used GML and Game Maker for the code and Piskel for the art. Deciding to challenge ourselves by exploring programs we have limited experience in using was a learning curve, but one that makes it all the more rewarding.
Challenges we ran into
The sheer scale of the project combined with the short time limit was a huge hurdle. We had to compromise between creating a prototype we're proud of and incorporating some of our more ambitious ideas due to time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of completing the major features of the demo program, learning and improving on our skills, and finishing within the time constraint.
What we learned
We explored and learned new skills in both Game Maker and pixel art spriting that we will be able to use in the future. We also learned how to brainstorm and develop ideas while managing our limited time.
What's next for Budgeting with Budgitto
In the future, we plan to increase the scale of the furniture system and add push notifications, as well as porting it to mobile with features such as a widget option. We also project to include graphs and timelines of the user's success in sticking to their budgeting goals over time.
