Inspiration
I got the inspiration from my grandmother who always taught me the value of investing my money and keeping track of all my expenses. Especially for a woman of her generation, she was very progressive minded, regularly investing in the stock and real estate markets. I also know many women of her age and even younger who went the opposite way and were told they don't need to worry about financial literacy as their husbands would take care of it for them. I believe everyone should have access to and utilise at least some savings or budget tracking tools so they have a basic grasp on their expenses and are not overtly reliant financially on anyone.
What it does
It helps homemakers who do not earn money to track their expenses on a 30 day rolling basis and compare it to the previous 30 day period. It is designed with a few common everyday categories in mind such as groceries, food , medical expenses etc. In addition, there is a small investment option where users can invest any small amount they have leftover into one of 3 options. While choosing so, they are shown the forecasted growth of their money so they can make an informed choice. They can also view their investments to date as a breakdown of the three investment categories.
How we built it
I used chatgpt to help set up the environment on my laptop where I could code using node.js. I used documentation and online resources such as stack overflow to build and debug the project. I used firebase as a backend for my project as it provides scalable data storage capabilities and built in features like secure log ins.
Challenges we ran into
I struggled working alone as I felt I did not have enough time to finish everything I wanted and left a few ideas on the table. I expecially was not able to polish my end product as much as I would have liked.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am very proud of my first ever full stack development and am very proud I did it all myself in such a short timeframe. I feel especially happy to know I made a product that could potentially help make a difference in someones life.
What we learned
I learned full stack development, how to work with firebase, node.js and how to build an application from scratch for the first time ever. I also learnt its ok not to be perfect and the most important part of development is to just start.
What's next for BudgetHer
I hope to take this project forward and implement some higher level ideas given more time. I hope to polish the UI of it and maybe even publish the app so people all around the world can use it as well.
