Inspiration

With rising food costs being a big issue in Canada and hearing many kids my age in university complaining about grocery prices and how expensive it is to eat out, I thought I could relieve such pain by making a simple app that could help the user with meal prep.

What it does

Takes in your dietary needs and budget and creates a guide you can follow to meal prep easily.

How we built it

Used Python and turtle graphics. I relied heavily on the

Challenges we ran into

The time constraints. I also have not used turtles to such an extent. I wanted a bigger data set of possible food combinations, more customizability, to output a shopping list, the recipes for each meal, track the calories to make sure you are meeting your requirements even have an option to go on a caloric surplus/deficit and so much more; unfortunately because of my limited knowledge and other complications that came about this weekend which led to time loss, I could not implement any of this. Right now the output is somewhat static regardless of your requirements.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I loved being able to create something that could have a genuine use case in the real world and create something like that in such a short amount of time.

What we learned

To not get too carried away. I think I dreamt too big for my first hackathon and this project has given me a better understanding of my abilities and has allowed me to reevaluate my skill level. It has shown me where I struggle as a programmer (like time management and getting too focused on the smaller details instead of the big picture).

What's next for BudgetBites

To keep working on it. I still want to implement all the things I wanted to. I am thinking of moving this project over to an HTML format maybe since that could be easier or I might just try learning the Django framework. I am still very much a beginner which I think is a good thing since it gives me a lot of options and I don't feel tied down to anything as of now.
