What's next for BudgetBeacon — personal budgeting on Alexa+
Inspiration
We noticed that many people find manual expense tracking tedious and disconnected from daily life. We wanted to create a seamless way to manage finances that feels like a conversation rather than a chore. Our goal was to bridge the gap between complex financial data and effortless voice interaction.
What it does
BudgetBeacon allows users to log expenses, set monthly limits, and query their spending habits using Alexa+. It interprets natural language to categorize transactions and provides proactive advice based on budget constraints. The system ensures that financial management is always accessible through a simple voice command.
How we built it
We implemented the core logic using Go to ensure high-performance execution within aws-lambda. We utilized amazon-bedrock for the reasoning engine and the strands-agents-sdk to manage the complex conversational flows required for Alexa+. The data persistence is handled through a dedicated budget schema to maintain consistency across different sessions.
Challenges we ran into
Mapping unstructured natural language input to structured budget categories required careful prompt engineering within amazon-bedrock. We also struggled with ensuring the latency of the Lambda functions remained low enough for a responsive Alexa experience. We solved these by optimizing our Go binaries and refining our agent response logic.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how smoothly the strands-agents-sdk handles complex financial queries without losing context. Creating a robust Go-based backend that powers Alexa+ was a major technical milestone for us. The accuracy of the budget insights generated by the model exceeded our expectations.
What we learned
We learned a lot about orchestrating LLM agents to handle sensitive financial data with precision. We also gained deep insights into how to structure budget data for rapid retrieval in a conversational environment. This project deepened our understanding of the nuances of building AI-first Alexa applications.
What's next for BudgetBeacon
We plan to integrate real-time bank API syncing to automate expense logging entirely. We also want to add predictive forecasting to help users anticipate when they might overspend before the month ends. Expanding the support for multiple currencies and regions is also on our roadmap.
