Budget Subs

Inspiration

As college students ourselves, we understand how difficult it is to keep track of our finances while balancing academics, part-time jobs, and extracurriculars. We thought a budgeting app for streaming subscriptions would be very useful to college students who need to save any penny they can. Usually, for streaming platforms, users sign up and are automatically billed every month. It is easy for busy college students to forget that they're still being charged for services they no longer use. We decided to create Budget Subs to help solve this problem.

What it does

This app keeps track of the user's streaming platform usage and sends an alert when a platform has not been used in 3 months by default. The user is then able to manage their subscriptions and choose to pause, cancel, or downgrade their plans all in one app!

How we built it

We designed our app wireframe by using Figma and experimenting with various icons, transitions, and fonts.

Challenges we ran into

As first-time hackers, we did not know what to expect in terms of the scope of projects and what to deliver. Our third teammate was unable to join us due to unforeseen events, so the two of us did not expect to take on as much work as we had thought. We are also more familiar with coding and haven't worked on a design project before, so it took some time for us to learn and get used to using Figma. In addition, since we had no prior design experience, we struggled to come up with user friendly designs at first.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We encountered many challenges during this experience, but we were able to overcome them. For example, we learned how to use Figma and gradually improved our app's design to be more user friendly and aesthetic. We're proud of completing our very first hackathon, and especially because we were able to even though we were one person down.

What we learned

We learned how to use a new technology, Figma, by utilizing Youtube and the Figma help pages as resources. We also learned how to think from a design perspective rather than from our usual programmers' perspectives.

What's next for Budget Subs

Since the app focuses solely on streaming services at the moment, we would want to expand the app to encompass more subscription services such as food delivery services and cloud storage services. We also plan to take family plans into consideration as well as bundle subscriptions and allow for a breakdown of services within the bundles.
