Inspirations
We all realized that we were going to go to university soon, but we didn't know how to manage our finances, so decided to take it upon ourselves to make a website that can help us determine how much money we will need over the course of 1-4 years. We took inspiration from the budgeting workbooks provided by the University of Waterloo.
What it is
BudgetMaster helps students in need manage the money they use during their time in university. By submitting how much you spend each month (including tuition, school supplies, etc.), BudgetMaster can calculate how much money you have to spare and how much you're spending.
How we made it
We built the website using HTML and CSS, and the budgeting programs were first made using Java, but were then recoded into JavaScript.
Challenges
There were a few challenges we ran into. Firstly, we spent a long time deciding what we wanted to do. Secondly, we could not integrate Java into an HTML website in a day, so we decided to recode the program into JavaScript. And thirdly, we were using a code-sharing website to code and when the website crashed, we lost all of our code and we had to completely restart.
What we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that we made a functioning website using 3 languages that we have never used, and that we got our budgeting code to work in the first few tries. We are also proud of the fact that we overcame many challenges and did not give up.
What we learned
The most important thing we learned was that we always need a backup plan to prepare for whatever might go wrong. We learned this because it took us a really long time to integrate Java into HTML and CSS, which is why we decided to recode our program into JavaScript instead.
The future of BudgetMaster
In the future, we will integrate more features such as information about where to apply for loans as well as more finance calculators like a mortgage calculator!
