Inspiration

I've used a bunch of budgeting apps before and honestly got tired of the same thing every time you open it, see a pie chart, close it, forget about it a week later. Nothing actually told me what to change. I'm a student building my first real app with actual monetization behind it, so I wanted to try solving that instead of just making another tracker.

What it does

It's an income/expense tracker dashboard, monthly totals, recent transactions, the basics. But the part I actually care about is the AI Assistant I added on top. It's not hooked up to any external AI model; it just reads your own transaction data and works out things like:

If you're spending more than usual in a category this month What a realistic savings target looks like based on what you're actually earning vs spending Answering stuff you type in, like "how do I save more this month," using your real numbers instead of generic advice

For the money side, there are two tiers. A one-time $1.99 lifetime purchase unlocks the core app, and the AI Assistant is a separate monthly subscription through RevenueCat. If you already bought the lifetime version, you get the AI subscription at half price I didn't want people who already paid once to feel like I was charging them again for something that should've just been included.

How we built it

Everything was built solo on Replit using Replit Agent I'd describe what I wanted and iterate from there. It's React Native/Expo underneath. RevenueCat handles both purchase types: the lifetime entitlement and a separate "Ai assistant" monthly entitlement, with the discounted pricing kicking in automatically depending on whether the user already holds the lifetime one.

Challenges we ran into

The annoying bug: before I'd actually set up the AI offerings in RevenueCat's dashboard, tapping the AI icon would sometimes trigger the "lifetime" paywall instead wrong purchase flow entirely. Had to go back and add a proper check so it fails safely instead of routing people to the wrong product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Getting the dual-entitlement RevenueCat setup actually working end to end lifetime purchase, separate AI subscription, and the discount logic all talking to each other correctly without conflicting. Also, proud that the AI Assistant runs entirely off the user's own data with zero external API calls, so there's no ongoing cost per user and nothing about their spending ever leaves the app.

What we learned

Mainly that pricing isn't just a business decision, it's a UX one too. Every single paywall trigger had to know exactly which entitlement it was checking, otherwise you end up accidentally breaking trust with someone who already paid you once.

What's next for Budget Manager Pro

Getting the RevenueCat products and offerings fully live so the AI subscription can actually be purchased end to end, then testing the whole flow with real transaction data before the app goes any further.
