Inspiration

We wanted to create a small app that would help recent college graduates budget based on their starting salary. We wanted to keep it simple since it was our first hackathon project.

What it does

It takes in the user's income, taxes, and debt, and outputs a rough estimate of various costs for each month.

How we built it

We used React written with Javascript and HTML to create our app, along with some of the default CSS provided. We used Firebase to host the web app.

Challenges we ran into

It was definitely tough since neither of us was very experienced in the API's and languages we used. We've only done a little bit of Javascript so this involved a lot of learning. We also struggled a little with keeping the app concept clear throughout the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're most proud of having preserved through a lot of strange issues and bugs while programming the app. We got through a lot of code together and managed to finish the project without any major bugs.

What we learned

We learned a significant amount from working with React and Firebase especially. Neither of us was familiar at all with these API's so the experience in building a website this weekend will definitely be appreciated for future hackathons.

What's next for Budget Buddy

I think we'd definitely want to expand this idea after getting more experience under our belts. There's a lot of room to improve the calculations themselves, the user's options, and the UI itself. I think we definitely want to wait a bit before trying a similar idea but it would be a great idea to take it to the next level later.
