Inspiration
Budget Buddy is inspired by the many pre-teens and teenagers who are the next to enter the world of managing money, however, who seem to be the least equipped. Upon brainstorming for an idea, we decided to tackle a problem among an age group we recently moved out of ourselves: financial literacy in those aged 10 to 15. After conducting some research, it was evident just how long the consequences of financial illiteracy last - on average, Canadian household debt represented 177% of disposable income in 2019, and only 61% of Canadians could pass a 7-question financial quiz. We decided to conquer financial illiteracy, starting from the beginning.
What it does
Budget Buddy instills the fundamental lessons of finance in a way more adorable than ever before - through the companionship of a pig named Bankie! Bankie will thrive on saving and responsible expenditures, while he will do the opposite upon fast and irresponsible spending. Through introducing an element of accountability, kids aged 10 to 15 are more likely to spend consciously. With the help and visualization of Bankie, financial literacy is making a comeback.
How I built it
This web-app was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Challenges I ran into
• Lack of coding and app creation experience; no experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript • Putting together an ambitious project in the time constraint

• Learning 3 completely new languages as a team! • A creative solution to a well-known real-life problem
What I learned
We stepped into app development for the first time, and saw firsthand how back-end and front-end development come together in this web-app.
What's next for Budget Buddy
• A more interactive experience where the user can track cash sources and uses, using accounts • An informational tab where the user can learn the most important financial concepts from a low level, such as credit and investment
