Inspiration
Saving money has been becoming increasingly difficult and we wanted to help people visualize their transactions for better money habits.
What it does
The app displays user transactions and expenses from actual banking institutions and calculates available balances. It is also able to redirect to specific news outlets related to money managing and displays account balance, credit scores, and income on the main dashboard.
How we built it
Using Plaid API we were able to create test users from their sandbox mode and our web app is able to retrieve banking data. Each user is able to have their own dashboard and ran from a local server.
Challenges we ran into
We initially used Firebase for users' login information but faced challenges connecting it to Plaid. The majority of our time was also implementing webhooks from Plaid to our application.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The app dynamically retrieves Plaid data and displays it for unique users logged in to their accounts. We are also very proud of having a simple and easy-to-navigate site that can help users make wiser decisions with money.
What we learned
We were not too familiar with using APIs and retrieving information using function calls but managed to learn a lot in a short time.
What's next for Budget Better
Implementing a news API that updates and gathers related content improving data retrieval speed from Plaid, as well as scaling and testing the application from test/sandbox data to real user data are planned for the near future.
