Inspiration
We were inspired by both budgeting apps and dating sims. Having a personal app that can track your spending is useful- by adding interesting characters, we can make it fun and engaging for the college-age audience we are trying to target.
What it does
We made a dating simulator that motivates players to invest in themselves. By spending their money wisely, the player can build relationships with the in-game characters. Additionally, the game gives them information on good investment habits.
How we built it
We built it in Unity Engine through C# scripts, and the art assets are done through websites like Piskel.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we faced was the integration of code between group members. When we merged our code together, we faced a few bugs. Through collaboration and conversation, we were able to detangle these bugs, but the debugging process took a few hours.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to compile a playable product within limited time frame. We were also able to research budgeting plans, like the 50/30/20 method.
What we learned
We learned to access and manipulate external text files in unity. We also learned how to apply string handling to establish a dialogue system that reads text files and inputs the text as dialogue.
What's next for Budget Besties
We plan to implement a more personalized experience for the user using AI systems and direct integration of the game into a banking app. With direct integration, the game could be directly linked to a person's spending. From there, we were planning on introducing an AI system that could directly address the user and give them budgeting support.
