Inspiration

We wanted to create a space where people could build meaningful relationships without the pressure or awkwardness of traditional social platforms. A place where users could explore, connect, and interact through a playful, game -like world—while still knowing that every interaction is built on safety, trust, and respect. Our goal was to design an app that blends adventure with authenticity: a digital environment where users can meet real people as characters, level up together through shared experiences, and form friendships that extend beyond the screen. The inspiration behind this project is the belief that everyone deserves a safe, fun, and welcoming space to find their people—no matter where they live or how busy life gets.

What it does

This app is a game-based social platform designed to help people make genuine, safe, and meaningful connections. Users appear as characters in a shared virtual world based on their real-life location, where they can explore, join group chats, complete quests, and meet new people nearby. Each character levels up by interacting positively, unlocking new features, and participating in community events. The app blends personality-based matching with playful gameplay, making it easier and more fun to start conversations and build friendships. Built-in safety systems—like AI message flagging, privacy controls, and behavior-based feature unlocking—ensure that interactions stay respectful, authentic, and comfortable.

How we built it

. We began by designing the full user flow, wireframes, and interactive screens in Figma, creating multiple prototypes to test how users would move through the game world, interact with others, and unlock new features. These prototypes helped us refine the visual style, map layout, character system, and overall user journey before development began.

Challenges we ran into

It was difficult to design a system that felt like a game without turning real human connections into something superficial. We had to iterate multiple times on the leveling system, quests, and rewards to keep the experience playful while still encouraging meaningful interactions. We wanted to prevent harmful behavior but didn’t want the app to feel like users were constantly monitored or restricted. Finding the right balance between freedom and protection was one of the biggest design challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a complete end-to-end user journey—character creation, map navigation, quests, safety features, and level-up mechanics—entirely in Figma. This let us test real interactions and refine the experience quickly. Blending quests, XP, levels, and unlockable features with real-world friendships was a challenge, but we achieved a design that feels fun, intuitive, and meaningful—not childish or gimmicky. We’re proud that safety wasn’t added at the end—it shaped the entire product. We designed privacy bubbles, AI message protection, anonymous blocking, and behavior-based unlocks that reward respectful communication.

What we learned

We learned that loneliness, social anxiety, and safety concerns aren’t abstract—they shape how people interact online. Talking to users helped us design features that actually solve these problems instead of guessing. We realized that adding levels, quests, and XP can motivate users, but it has to encourage healthy behavior, not pressure or addiction. We learned to design game mechanics that build confidence, not competition. We learned how challenging it is to combine a “game” with a “social app” without overwhelming users. Simplicity and clarity became key—every screen needed to be playful and useful.

What's next for BuddyVerse

Our goal is to scale BuddyVerse to new cities, campuses, and regions, making it easy for users everywhere to meet nearby friends while maintaining privacy and safety. We aim to add optional, low-risk IRL meetups with safety timers, designated public locations, and check-ins, so online friendships can transition naturally into real-world connections. BuddyVerse will grow alongside its users. We’ll continue testing prototypes, gathering community feedback, and improving the app based on real-world usage and behavior patterns.
