Inspiration
When we first heard about the theme, restoration, we came up with something related to Covid-19 pandemic. Discussing various negative changes for the past two years, we noticed that the percentages of stress, anxiety and depression have increased with continuing lockdown and quarantine. We also could surely sympathize with that and decided to make something that is helpful for people’s mental health.
What it does
This web application provides this week’s contents about psychology-related books, quotes, and videos to support people’s improved mind and body set. Furthermore, it provides an email subscription service in which any registered user can receive email notification weekly to see what’s new.
How we built it
We used React as our main code and Cloud Firestore from Firebase for the database. There are several libraries we used for better UI in React - react-scroll, react-player. The majority of functions were written in the main file which is App.js and Firebase was also used in Modal.js which handles the subscription email part.
Challenges we ran into
We initially had a hard time to decide which product to make. But after three hours of discussion and exploring various products, we decided to make the current application.
There was a little bit of struggle with hosting a website. When we also tried to connect the Firebase-hosting website with the customized domain that we purchased in domain.com, due to a number of hours waiting for verification, we are currently submitting with the Firebase-customized domain name. But the domain we would like to apply is buddyisyourbuddy.tech.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Hosting an website and having our own domain
- Using various APIs
- Making a product within a day
What we learned
- How to think about problems and how to find solutions
- How React is useful in building website and connecting any forms of database
- Connecting domain
- Various libraries and functions for UI just like a professional website
What's next for Buddy
We need to randomly select the Youtube video and find a more efficient way to recommend psychology-related books and quotes.
