Inspiration

Balancing health and wellness can be a challenging task, especially in a tech-driven world. It's easy to get carried away and forget about important daily habits like staying active, getting enough sleep, or managing stress. Having seen success in gamified study apps, like those inspired by Tamagotchi, we wanted to bring that same level of engagement to building better and healthier habits. With bud, we aim to make staying healthy something people look forward to every day, making it more accessible and enjoyable to improve one's well-being.

What it does

bud is a gamified health and wellness app that makes it fun to keep track of one's personal health and wellness. The app features a virtual pet (called a "bud"), which users can name and care for. The virtual pet gently reminds and encourages the user to complete their health goals. As these goals are achieved, which can be visualized through a closing ring, users earn cookies, a virtual currency, which they can use to buy items for their bud. Based on the user's health and fitness information, the bud reflects their own progress--becoming happier and more energized as one reaches their daily goals. The app tracks key metrics like calories burned, steps, and sleep, and also offers personalized tips based on one's personal context in order to help users stay on track and improve their habits over time.

How we built it

Our team primarily focused on Figma for this hackathon to develop a polished, user-friendly demo. The design features minimalist elements, soft pastel tones, and an intuitive interface to create a welcoming user experience. In the future, we plan to transition bud into a full-stack project in the near future (there is already progress being made in the linked GitHub repository).

Challenges we ran into

This was the first hackathon for three of our four team members, but we all had a great time and learned a lot about using Figma at such large scale. We also gained valuable experience about front-end development while working to deploy the design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We really enjoyed putting our heads together to create a final design that we're proud of! We're also excited about how we're tackling an important issue -- we think that gamification of health and wellness can truly be a small but important step into encouraging healthy behaviors in a fun and interactive way.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the power of design tools and how to use them effectively to bring a working concept from the board to the screen. Prototyping and ideating helped us understand more of the user experience when considering app functionality.

What's next for bud

Moving forward, we plan to transition bud into a full-stack webapp. There are many opportunities for expansion, such as considering more health factors like hydration, mood tracking, and mindfulness. We also aim to use AI-powered tools to route users to verified resources that recommend healthy practices based on one's personal health context. Additionally, we plan to introduce social features where users can connect with friends and share their progress, further enhancing motivation and accountability on their wellness journey.
