Inspiration : Created in the fall of 2024, Bucky's Closet is Santa Clara University’s student-run on-campus thrift store. It serves students, staff, and faculty by repurposing second-hand clothing, shoes, accessories, school supplies, and other small items. By reusing resources, we are building a more efficient community, diverting unnecessary waste from landfills, reducing emissions, and saving money. The best part is that this resource is conveniently located on campus and completely FREE!
What it does : The store accepts clothing, shoes, accessories, office/school supplies, and other small items in “like new” to “gently worn” condition. Please, nothing broken, torn, badly stained, or needing repair!
How we built it : We brainstormed the idea initially, decided what fields should be there in the database, divided the work among all team members so that time is not wasted, communicating the progress of work frequently, merging all the work into git repository time by time, improving each time.
Challenges we ran into : Some of the group members have families and kids at home to take care of. So they cannot stay overnight . They went to their homes. But we communicated through whatsapp group chats, phone calls throughout the night and early morning till they come back to the site again to keep the work going.
Accomplishments that we're proud of : We were able to put all the pieces together and build a working and presentable website together.
What we learned : This is the first hackathon for most of the members. So everyone learnt a lot from it about how to generate ideas, work together, communicate, showing positive attitude and commitment to achieve goals together.
What's next for Bucky Closet- The Sustainability Thrift Store : We are planning to expand our website to incorporate more features like adding the count of items each student / faculty donated and the count of items each student / faculty is collecting from the store. Give badges to the high performers which earn points which can be used in the Benson dining center to get discounted food. Increase awareness of this store amount Santa Clara Community so that more and more people can participate there by saving environment, money, overall reduction in wastage.
