Inspiration
I'm a commuter, and I always find it hard to guess the time it actually takes for me to drive from home, park my car, catch the shuttle, and finally reach class. I wanted to develop an app that makes it easier by auto-calculating each of these fields, helping users know when to leave for campus and plan their commute efficiently.
What it does
It calculates the commute time, shuttle delays, parking delays, and the walking time to a class (or any other destination), giving users a clear estimate of their total travel time. Users can save commutes, start them again, and even see widgets in the home screen to get a summary of their ride.
How we built it
This app is entirely built using Lovable's no-code platform. It leverages Lovable’s AI components for UI design, forms, data storage, and in-app logic, allowing us to create a full-featured web app without writing code.
Challenges we ran into
The major challenges were designing the logic behind each feature to ensure accurate calculations for driving, parking, shuttle, and walking times, as well as making the UI intuitive. Integrating all features while keeping the app simple and user-friendly required careful planning.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud to have built an app that solves a real problem for OSU commuters. It provides actionable, easy-to-understand commute estimates and allows users to save and start commutes while seeing a clear breakdown of time for each part of the journey.
What we learned
I learned how to structure logic in a no-code platform to simulate real-world timing calculations, how to design a clean and intuitive user experience, and how to present data dynamically to users. We also improved our skills in planning workflows, handling user interactions, and thinking critically about UX for a specific audience.
What's next for BuckeyeCommute
Future improvements include integrating real-time data from Google Maps and the OSU shuttle system, implementing actual push notifications for live commute updates, and expanding features to allow multiple destinations or recurring commute plans. We also want to make the app mobile-friendly so users can check their commute on the go.
