Inspiration
As a dad with a young basketballer, I never want to miss a play. I want keep my eyes on the court. But I also want to keep some stats because stats are hard to come by when kids are younger. I dreamed for years of an app that I could use to keep stats without distracting me from the game. So I created Buckets! Last year, I actually started to build it from scratch using VS Code and react native. But I had never written react native before and the learning curve was steep as I had been out of practice for over five years. When Bolt.new came along, I decided to give it another go and now, just 4 days later the entire application is complete!
What it does
Buckets! makes it easy to stay focused on the game while simultaneously recording stats for your baller and his friends, too. You can have multiple players, teams and games. During a game you can record the stats listed below for multiple players. For each player you can record: -3PT make/miss -2PT make/miss -FT make/miss -Rebounds -Assists -Blocks -Fouls -Turnovers
The app will show you totals and percentages by player, game, team and lifetime! Premium subscribers can have unlimited data and export their data for use in other apps.
How we built it
Last year I designed the entire app in Figma. After trying develop it in VS Code for a few weeks, I gave up. It was too time consuming and the learning curve was steep for me having been out of computer engineering for about 8 years. For the hackathon, I decided to built it with Bolt.new. I started working with ChatGPT to create a good initial prompt. I imported one of the Figma mockups into Bolt with my prompt and off we went. I created a supabase and a stripe account. 4 days later the app was done.
Challenges we ran into
Learning to work with Bolt.new effectively and use tokens wisely. Jumping back and forth between bolt and VS Code and managing github was challenging at time. There are a lot of features that would make Bolt a better IDE, but it's a new, young product. It has a ton of potential, though and I couldn't have build Buckets! without it. The mobile deployments using expo contain errors that I will have to work through manually or spin up an emulator on my desktop to work through them. Manual debugging is not a thing in the bolt ide.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting it done so quickly!!!
What we learned
AI tools like bolt and chatGPT are beyond transformative. Even revolutionary is not a strong enough word for the change that is coming as a result of these tools.
What's next for Buckets!
Continuing to refine the user experience and provide premium features. I want to deploy it to the app stores next and see if other people like it.
