Our project seeks to unravel the scope and impact of China's state media presence on social media channels through innovative data visualization techniques. By analyzing and visualizing different facets of China's state social media, we aim to provide clear insights into the patterns, trends, and potential implications of foreign interference. Leveraging data scraping techniques and advanced algorithms, our visualization tool will present a comprehensive overview of China's impact, contributing to a better-informed public discourse on this significant global issue.

The dataset we aim to visualize comprises social media accounts, encompassing details such as follower count, their area of focus, and the parent organization affiliation. Our primary emphasis lies in understanding the potential impact each account could wield, with the number of followers serving as a key metric. To enhance categorization, we leverage parameters like target language, target country, and parent organization, providing a nuanced perspective on the influence these accounts may exert in various areas.

The number of followers on a social media account holds paramount importance for its effectiveness. A substantial follower count not only enhances the account's reach but also amplifies its influence and credibility. It serves as a visible metric of the account's popularity and impact within its niche. A larger follower base increases the potential for content visibility, engagement, and, consequently, the dissemination of the account's message or brand. Brands and individuals often leverage follower count as a key indicator of social media success, influencing partnerships, collaborations, and overall online presence. In essence, a robust follower base contributes significantly to the overall effectiveness and influence of a social media account. So, we used the number of followers as the main piece of data in our project, recognizing its significance in gauging the potential impact of social media accounts. The follower count serves as a quantifiable measure of an account's reach and influence, making it a pivotal factor in assessing its effectiveness. To best categorize and analyze this data, we strategically considered key factors such as the country, language, and parent organization. These criteria were chosen for their relevance in understanding the geopolitical context, target audience, and overarching influence of the accounts. By incorporating these categorizing factors, our visualization aims to provide nuanced insights into the foreign interference landscape on social media, offering a comprehensive perspective that goes beyond mere follower numbers.

Challenges we ran into

In delving into the realm of social media and its impact on political landscapes, we recognized the paramount importance of analyzing the content disseminated by these accounts. Understanding the political motives, objectives, and messaging conveyed through their publications offered crucial insights into their influence. Our endeavor involved a substantial investment of time to extract and analyze this data successfully.

However, our efforts were met with challenges imposed by the platforms themselves. Stringent restrictions aimed at preventing data extraction posed significant obstacles. These restrictions were so impactful that some of our accounts faced outright bans, compelling us to reconsider their utilization in our project. Despite these hurdles, we persisted in our commitment, dedicating a substantial portion of our time to navigate and overcome these platform-imposed limitations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Having extracted insightful data, our focus shifted to the visualization phase. We meticulously crafted diagrams that not only effectively communicated the most crucial information but also ensured clarity for the audience. The selection of diagram types was a deliberate and careful process, with each chosen format tailored to optimally represent the specific data we intended to convey. This strategic approach ensured that our visualizations were not only visually appealing but also maximally informative, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies within the dataset.

Building on the project's progress, the optimal next step involves extracting information from the content shared on the accounts under investigation. Accessing the platforms' APIs would be essential for this endeavor. By obtaining the actual content, we can gain profound insights into the accounts' political affiliations, objectives, and more. Leveraging Natural Language Processing (NLP) holds immense potential in deciphering the context within the content, allowing for a nuanced understanding. Additionally, machine learning techniques can be applied to categorize the extracted information, providing a structured analysis of the diverse content. This approach not only enhances the depth of our analysis but also lays the foundation for a comprehensive examination of the accounts' motives and ideologies.
