BTC Food Calculator

A goof web-app that displays to the user how many meals they could buy for those in need with the current cost of 1 Bitcoin. The page is updated every 6 seconds to reflect the current cost of BTC.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the use of Bitcoin as a speculative investment. I thought that there must be a more efficient use of the funds flowing into BTC at the same moment when millions of Americans are starving.

What it does

Not too complicated, more just an exercise in API calls and webhosting. I'm working solo on this and I'm happy with how the webapp looks.

How we built it

React and Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the React components were a bit temperamental but nothing too insane.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I think it's moving to stare at the insanely large amount of food that one Bitcoin can buy and think of all of the people getting rich and all of the people going hungry.

What we learned

I got better at using React and Firebase. I had been a bit rusty with React and I had never deployed to Firebase before so it was nice to try something new!

What's next for BTC Food Calculator

Hopefully, some catchy domain name that can trick SEO.
