Why build this?
It’s basically a meme at the point that plans never actually leave the group chat. At the end of the day, everybody has their own priorities, which makes it hard to get everyone to commit to plans. We built this app to kill this meme and give groups a reasonable but spontaneous plan to easily commit to. With this, technology can be a support for meaningful human interaction, not just a replacement like social media often is.
What is it, exactly?
Pull Up is a web app that allows you to instantly form a crew and invite your friends, without needing an account. Every week, y'all vote on a randomly generated quest, like playing bus roulette or buying a new board game. Additionally, secret roles can be given out to crewmates for additional tasks. Once complete, take a photo to prove you completed the quest. At the end of the month, your team can generate recaps of y’all’s adventures in a photo collage with funny captions. Quests are meant to feel casual and reduce the mental barrier of setting up plans.
How we built it
The codebase is based on the NextJs framework and can be found on this Github repo.. After settling on an idea and locking in on our tech stack, we created a basic skeleton. From there, we iterated, adding and testing features one by one. Our UI, infrastructure, AI, and database developers collaborated closely on this project.
Challenges
Using so many new APIs and JS modules was challenging because there was so much to learn. Documentation takes a long time to read, and it takes time to practice using any new tool. In this way, LLMs were able to serve a legitimate purpose in our workflow by quickly teaching us how to use tools like Drizzle and React, and how to use Muse within the codebase. Obviously, it would take more time to master, but in a short time frame, we were able to learn enough to make Pull Up.
Accomplishments
We’re quite proud of how simple, responsive and inviting our UI turned out to be. Additionally, we managed to test a lot of edge cases and ensure our app is as safe and bug-free as possible. Most importantly, we made something that we could and likely would actually use in real life. We were able to add more features than we initially planned to add, like photo roulette and the “now” tab.
What we learned for next time
Ideation took much longer than expected. It was somewhat difficult for us to come up with an original idea. We need to improve our creative process and ensure it’s robust and useful.
What's next for Pull Up
Next, we plan on adding more fun features to make group outings more interesting.
