Inspiration

Stony Brook students often have a degree audit but no clear path from required classes to a career. We wanted to help turn “What should I take next?” into a plan they can act on.

What it does

Brook reads a Degree Works audit and builds a personalized course and career roadmap. It considers prerequisites, graduation goals, course availability, and how classes can satisfy multiple requirements, then pairs semesters with career steps like projects and internship applications.

How we built it

We built Brook with Next.js and Tailwind, using a course catalog, Degree Works PDF parsing, and requirement checks to ground the plan in a student’s academic record. Gemini powers the planning conversation, with a pipeline that gathers context and checks the proposed roadmap.

Challenges we ran into

Degree Works PDFs are difficult to parse consistently, and requirement rules can be nuanced. We had to distinguish completed credits from courses in progress, account for prerequisite chains, and avoid recommending inactive or unverified courses.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a working flow from audit upload to a semester-by-semester roadmap, and designed the experience to connect academic requirements with career preparation. We also created a polished demo using a real audit import.

What we learned

A useful planning agent needs more than a strong model. It needs reliable student data, accurate course and requirement sources, and checks that catch conflicts before a plan reaches the student.

What's next for Brook

Improve roadmap generation reliability, expand and verify course and requirement coverage across majors, and let students adjust constraints and regenerate plans with clear explanations for each recommendation.
