Inspiration
The Bronx is a vibrant community, but many residents struggle to access vital services like food banks, healthcare, and mental health support. Information is often scattered, outdated, or hard to find, especially for vulnerable groups. Bronx HelpHub was created from the belief that everyone deserves fast, reliable access to help when they need it most.
Our goal is to use technology as a bridge, connecting people to life-changing resources and breaking down barriers in times of crisis.
What it does
Bronx HelpHub is a centralised web app helping Bronx residents find essential local services by allowing them to:
- Search resources like food banks, shelters, clinics, and educational programs.
- Filter by location, type, and eligibility.
- View interactive maps to locate nearby help.
- Access up-to-date contact info and directions.
- (Planned) Create accounts to save resources and get personalised recommendations.
How I built it
The project uses a full-stack approach:
- Frontend: React.js with Bootstrap for a clean, responsive UI.
- Backend: Node.js and Express for API handling.
- Maps: Google Maps API for geolocation.
- Hosting: Cloud platforms for reliability and scalability.
I used modular design and GitHub for version control and collaboration.
Challenges I faced
- Collecting and validating accurate community data.
- Managing API limits and map integration.
- Balancing rich features with accessibility.
- Working within tight hackathon deadlines.
Accomplishments
- Delivered a fully functional, user-friendly web app.
- Integrated real-time interactive maps.
- Built an accessible, scalable platform.
- Translated a social need into a digital solution rapidly.
What I learned
- Applying design thinking to real problems.
- Full-stack development from frontend to database.
- Efficient use of external APIs.
- Importance of user-centric design and teamwork under pressure.
What's next
Future plans include:
- User accounts with saved resources and personalised suggestions.
- Multilingual support for Bronx’s diverse population.
- Mobile app with offline access and notifications.
- Admin dashboards for data insights.
- Real-time emergency alerts.
- Partnerships with local nonprofits and agencies.
Bronx HelpHub aims to evolve from a hackathon project into a vital community lifeline, starting here in the Bronx and beyond.
