Inspiration

We live a hectic life, and the school run and getting ready for work are crazy. Every Monday morning my wife and I spend precious time searching up what the recycling is that week (London boroughs run mostly on alternate week schedules). Tired of this, i thought there should be a better way

What it does

Ask Bromley Bins what the recycling is for your week (the borough is split into Week1 or Week2), and it will tell you. Don't know your week? Ask it what the recycling is for your road and town, and it will tell you, as well as the day the recycling is due to be put out. It also takes into account public holidays, and the weeks after holiday periods, when the recycling is another day.

How I built it

I took the PDF docs that Bromley council provide - road/town by week (week1 or week2), and the schedules for week 1 and week 2. Converted them to CSV files, and cleaned the dupes (!). Then I created 3 tables in dynamodb to store this info. The skill is written in node, and uses current-week-number to look up the schedule once it knows the week for that road/town, or user specifies.

Challenges I ran into

DynamoDB is great, but not being able to pattern match against the hash was something I didn't RTFM before!

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Not used nosql before, so really pleased that the latency is good, and that I worked out the IAM and the implementation!

What I learned

usage of dynamoDB

What's next for BromleyBins

Extend the secondary indexes, and also look at implementing NLP to resolve any 'mishearing' of names.
