In the distant future of 2077, the abandoned arcade down the street has caught your eye. You feel a strange urge to explore. Late at night, as the rain batters on your windshield, you drive closer.
Our big inspiration was from the Retro theme of HackNotts 2023.
We also have had a massive interest in learning JS, React and Node.js
What it does
The game takes you through an abandoned arcade in the year 2077, where not everything is as it seems... You will explore the arcade and find quirks with the place, which a weird, weird ending!
The game aims to mix your average Text-Based Adventure alongside a more immersive experience, incorporating different visual and audio aspects which play alongside the game.
How we built it
The back-end hosts the actual game logic and an API is used to pass user options from the backend to the frontend, and vice versa for communications from the game. This is built with node.js and express.js
The frontend is built with react, utilising HTML, CSS and JS
Challenges we ran into
One of our team members didn't know any JS before starting this Hackathon, so to then go on and make the amazing Snake game in our game is awesome!
As first-time hackers, we found the insane and unexpected time restraints combined with such an ambitious idea as a massive struggle. After some groundings, we reached a medium we were proud of, and know we can expand in our own time
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The game, as a whole, looks amazing! We're really happy with the final product, however we know that so much can be added on top to make it even better!
What we learned
JavaScript,
Node.js,
React,
Express.js,
Expanded on original HTML & CSS knowledge
What's next for Broken Neon
We love our storyline, and know that it's nowhere near finished yet. So, after this, we hope that we can get Broken Neon 1 a nicer, and more strange and confusing ending. Call this version a demo of what we've got in stock.
When we think BN1 is complete, we think that making prequels and sequels to enrich the storyline sounds awesome, and would be really fun!
We would like to move BN1 from a web-application to a normal application, in the interest of ease for future developments.
