Inspiration

Have you ever gone to the grocery store and thought, "That is one good looking tomato! I should buy it for my next salsa." You go home and store it in the fridge. A day goes by and the tomato is still in the fridge; you have forgotten about the tomato. A few days later you go grocery shopping again;refill your fridge. That once perfect tomato has faded into oblivion. Its not until a couple of weeks later that you find a puddle of red goo in your fridge and realize that it was "the tomato for the salsa."

What Broccoli Does

A lot of people have difficulty remembering everything that they have in their fridge, especially meats and produce which have fast expiration dates. Food goes bad, and there is a disappoint in the person for wasting time and money on their foods. This problem inspired us to create an app that will reduce food waste. That being said, Broccoli, has been developed to read user input whether its the expiration date of a product or the produce. It will then send reminders to the user as well as recipes that are focused in using the products that the user listed. In addition, the app is meant to target individuals who prefer to spend a shorter time in the kitchen. Therefore, most recipes are made to fit a 20 min mark or less and is dedicated to make dishes related to the groceries listed by the user. Furthermore, the app also, offers tips for food storage, because it is important that user is aware of the different ways to store their food. Lastly, the app comes with a mini social media platform in which the user can post his or her creations for other users to see, the goal of this is to motivate the user to cook more given the amount of likes per picture.

Problems We Faced

In building the app we had a couple of problems with coding and grabbing data from the database. With reference to the design, as a team weren't sure of how the app was going to look like. Overall, Broccoli was fun to build and hopefully it can become something better in the future.
