Inspiration
The inspiration and reason for being is just as loopy as the project itself. Originally i had other plans involving more furbys but managed to misremember the week of the hackathon. The days before i aimed to think of other mental ideas. sleep deprived and entertained by britain memes my mind wandered to a sort of silly game and the idea death spiraled from there.
What it does
the game is a fully virtualised joke interpretation of british supermarkets in VR. Not really at all true to real life, greatly exagerated and quite rediculous but the intention was for it to be fun to make and hopefully funny to play so i'm happy with it. The intention was a sort of mock horror game.
How we built it
On a wing and a prayer. the game itself is a chucked together hodgepodge of code. the godot game engine is responsible for running the game, interfacing with openXR to control the VR headset.
Challenges we ran into
there were a multitude of issues. hardware was a big one. my workstation is fairly old and as a result was uncompatible after a good faf with the original rift s headset planned, in the end i used an oculus link hooked up haphazardly to avlr over the ADB and wifi facilitated by a raspberry pi 3 plugged into my workstation. Godot 4 is new to the vR scene and it's openXR implimentation isn't the best documented yet. i have never really used let alone programmed for VR so this was a nightmare. time was the main challange as this was a very ambitious project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
as mentioned i have never worked with VR before, so even if the end result as of yet is far off the original goal and not particularly functional, there are definitely playable parts featuing movment, player interaction and functional use of a VR headset. an achievement i am proud of and a new hoard of knowledge to continue tinkering. i intend to continue fiddling with VR.
What we learned
I have learned a great deal about programming for VR with the godot 4 game engine and openXR, the learning curve was signinficantly larger than expected and i have enjoyed the challenge
What's next for British Supermarket Simulator
The project is largely unfinished and if i could go back i would have saved it for a longer hackathon. I intend to continue working on the project to try and finish it as it has been fun to work on. Many design choices and cut corners were made as a result of time constraints and i wish to go back and clean up the overall experience to make the game more complete and more fun to play.
