Inspiration

My family is aging and many of my elder aunts, uncles, and cousins are showing signs of slowing down. I wanted to consider ways to preserve their cognitive health with stimulating games that are age-friendly enough for the family to play. While the focus is on elders, the program seeks to provide games that help sharpen memory in general. With women and minorities disproportionately being affected by issues like dementia and Alzheimer's*, it's important that we find new ways using our advancing technology to support our friends and family.

What it does

BrightMind is an augmented reality platform hosting cognitive games. The current offerings test reasoning, language, motor skills, and memory!

How I built it

I built this using scripts and LightGuide's proprietary augmented reality (AR) system, along with their provided Projected AR hardware.

Challenges I ran into

I've never used LightGuide's system prior to this, and the computer vision programs had a learning curve that I had to get through to ensure the hardware cooperated with my scripting. There was a lot of troubleshooting and finding new bugs in the system based on different methods I was trying, and I had to pivot if the method was eating too much time.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of the extensibility of the program, the way I adapted previous scripts and created brand new ones, and learning how to navigate computer vision programs.

What I learned

The simplicity of the interface makes the program easy to navigate, but not necessarily easy to build. I learned how much goes behind the scenes of a projected AR program that seems simplistic.

What's next for BrightMind

It would be fantastic to finish the Musical Bingo game! The current games can also be made more challenging and/or add levels beyond the current offering. BrightMind can also be extended into adapting traditional games like Sudoku, Scrabble, and more.
