Inspiration
All of us here in London benefit from top tier academics and resources for our learning. But from conversations with those from less developed countries, we hear of colleges with less resources that may impact knowledge acquisition of students.
AI is advancing the democratisation of knowledge. Now, anyone with internet can have PHD level intelligence in their pocket. But many new entrants into the world of academia will still have significant barriers to entry. Reading new or seminal academic materials seem like large hill to climb with stacks of jargon - you don’t even know what you don’t know. We're helping people overcome these gaps.
What it does
Novel attempt to bridge gap by using LLMs to provide college level explanation of papers. This allows students to understand seminal and new research, in context of lack of ready access to mentors and academics for further learning. Better than just Claude or even NotebookLM because you don't have to prompt over and over - it goes ahead and figures out what jargon might be a barrier, and immediately breaks it down. You can further explore anything you still don't quite get.
How we built it
Claude B-) Our AI agent finds and breaks down complex jargon in uploaded academic content (like academic research papers). I provides a side by side view with the paper and the explanations - with links to find out more information.
Challenges we ran into
API issues and run-time errors. There is a risk of hallucination which would be terrible in academic context, which is why it is important that information is grounded in verifiable links.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The UI works!! And we think this would actually be useful to us as well for dissertation.
