Inspiration
We began by brainstorming different minorities we could help with consumer technology and were in agreement that children born into low-income families struck a chord: they should be given the same opportunities enjoyed by their middle and upper-class counterparts. Our initiative takes form as a platform designed to streamline the donation of essential school supplies and funds directly to schools in need by generous donors. Our technology connects donors and schools in need, thus helping to bridge the educational gap and provide equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their economic background. Together, we can create an enhanced and more supportive learning environment, thus creating a brighter future for the next generation.
What it does
Our platform connects generous donors to schools lacking the necessary supplies and funds to give their students a well-rounded, and enjoyable, education. The effect of the website will soon be observable as the current generation enters the workforce and become adults.
How we built it
We chose Python, HTML, and CSS to create our website. It has multiple pages to support accounts, a list of schools, donations, etc.
Challenges we ran into
Creating a database set up was much harder than we thought and we did not have time to get a functional database working.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The amount of HTML, CSS, and Python we wrote within 48 hours is quite a lot and supports an intricate website. We worked efficiently and in tandem; we're very proud of how much we got done in such a short amount of time and how much it will contribute to society.
What we learned
We learned a lot about Flask framework and backend web development. Previously, we had both only done mostly front end, so this hackathon forced us to do some backend work as well and learn new skills.
What's next for BridgeTheGap
We want to expand the website to use a MySQL database for donor/school account management, add a method where donors can donate any supplies they want, and create a payment gateway. We also want to create more ways for our creation to be spread and become a success.
