BridgeSearch Discord Bot

--Building Our Bridge--

Inspiration

We were inspired by the theme of "building bridges." So, we thought of it in terms of a metaphorical bridge that connects a person to their community. Since an individual's community can be made out of any group of individuals with shared interests, we thought of some basic groups a socially conscious gamer might be interested in connecting with.

What it does

We developed our discord bot to be able to connect the user to health resources, volunteer opportunities, cultural centers around them and threw in a video game, because, why not?

How we built it

We used the techniques and dependencies that Rachel taught us in the "build a discord bot" workshop to build our bot, and added some GIFs and games.

Challenges we ran into

During the planning stages of the 'hack', we were considering the idea of developing a search engine directly within the bot, so the user would be able to type in any word after the bot command, and it would send them to a google search of that word. Unfortunately, after Rachel's input and some of our own research, that seemed to be a rather large undertaking that we were not prepared to finish within 32 hours.

What we learned

While putting the finishing touches on our bot, and loading it up with some extra features that made it a more entertaining experience for the user, we ended up being very pleased with our decision to make a functional bot with a positive social impact, instead of a bigger project that would have required a much more infrastructure.

What's next for BridgeSearch

As our bot says, we plan on increasing the bot's reach, and developing its capability to expand its searches across the country. Building bridges, one discord bot command, at a time.
