Inspiration
At the Hackathon Opening Ceremony, we were inspired by various non-profit organizations who expressed their problems and concerns that they faced within their own respective groups. Our thought was, "Why can't all these problems be solved using one application. One that could provide the tools necessary for any non-profit to reach their goals." From this idea, we constructed an app we called BridgeNP. (Bridge Non-Profit),
What it does
BridgeNP connects non-profit organizations to fellow people in communities, increasing interaction through our app. Individuals have a more streamlined and effective way of finding non-profit organizations in their communities to reach their needs, while non-profit organizations have a more centralized platform to reach out and manage their own organizations.
How we built it
We utilized Ionic Framework for the front-end aspect of BridgeNP. This way we could periodically see how the app would look with ease. This framework incorporates HTML 5 and CSS components to design different pages, and also was extended to touch upon NodeJS and AngularJS libraries. The functions were powered by Javascript within the Ionic Framework.
Challenges we ran into
It was a challenge adapting to different software environments. Half of the time was spent understanding how a platform works and the other half was finding clever ways to execute what you wanted it to do. We also ran into a challenge the second day when one of our teammates could not stay for the rest of the competition. We were able to pull through though while keeping the key features that make the app what it is.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to produce an app that has the potential to be even more helpful in our own community, and to support non-profits everywhere.
What we learned
Creating the app you envision takes time and patience. Reinforcing it’s purpose and striving to get better is motivation enough. Getting everything to work without fault isn't easy, especially given time and resource constraints.
What's next for BridgeNP
BridgeNP was created to bridge communication between people and non-profit organizations. In keeping with that vision, we would encourage people in the Santa Cruz community to use the app. If it is well received we would love to see it become a full fledged application for non-profits and communities alike to reach out to one another, and ultimately provide betterment for all.
