Inspiration

We believe sustainability starts with small actions, but real impact comes from communities working together. We wanted to make permaculture accessible, engaging, and rewarding while helping environmental organizations grow their impact.

What it does

CommonGround is an all-in-one sustainability platform featuring:

  • Plan Your Plot: Analyze local weather, sunlight, slope, soil, and water availability to assess growing potential. Design garden beds, discover companion plants like tomatoes and basil, and follow a personalized planting calendar. No account required, with garden plans stored locally on your device.
  • Smart Gardening: Learn permaculture principles through interactive, personalized recommendations.
  • Volunteer Incentives: Discover community activities, earn rewards, and track environmental impact.
  • Admin Hub: Manage events, volunteers, participation, and community impact.
  • AI-Powered GTM: Discover potential nonprofit and business partners, automate outreach, and manage sponsorship opportunities.

How we built it

We developed CommonGround as an interactive web application using AI-assisted development, combining garden planning, historical weather data from Open-Meteo, volunteer engagement, administrative dashboards, and AI-powered partnership discovery.

Challenges we ran into

  • Integrating gardening, volunteering, and nonprofit management into one seamless experience.
  • Translating complex environmental and weather data into simple gardening recommendations.
  • Designing incentives that encourage sustained volunteer participation.
  • Building scalable AI-powered partnership workflows.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a personalized garden planner with site analysis, bed layouts, and planting calendars.
  • Created a gamified volunteer experience connecting online learning with real-world environmental action.
  • Brought community management and AI-powered partnership outreach into one platform.

What we learned

Sustainability requires more than awareness — it needs accessible tools, community engagement, and meaningful incentives. Combining environmental data with intuitive design can make permaculture practical for beginners.

What's next for CommonGround

  • Expand AI-powered garden planning with real-time climate and soil insights.
  • Introduce volunteer rewards through local business partnerships.
  • Improve AI partner matching, outreach, and fundraising.
  • Collaborate with nonprofits, schools, and community gardens to scale environmental impact.
