Inspiration 💡
Although childcare is a necessity for many working families, its accessibility is incredibly low. Not only does is it cost $700 a month on average, but many childcare centers are also bombarded with demand causing overwhelmingly long waitlists. According to an article on The 19th, a mother got on waitlists when she was about 12 weeks pregnant with her daughter. And now her daughter is almost a year and a half old, still on the waitlist. We wanted to build a product that eliminates the long wait and provide the high-quality childcare every child deserves. We also wanted to open up career opportunities marginalized groups like seniors and undocumented individuals as job discrimination for these groups are prominent.
What it does 🤷♀️
Our website has two main functions: to provide working parents affordable, local, safe, and high-quality childcare and a platform to become certified caretaker for these working families. It provides these services by using user inputted data (when they sign-up and make a profile) to direct them to the best caretakers in their area. On the other end, certified caretakers can set up a profile, receive care requests, and messages to engage with families reaching out for care. There is also an authentication system in place to make the initial sign-up secure.
Challenges we ran into 💻
As first-time hackers, the entire team had little to no experience with full stack, figma, javascript, and backend development. We had to pivot four times with our databases starting from SupaBase to MongoDB to Prisma to the JASON Static File. But nevertheless, our team pushed across our limits learning more about backend development, frontend development, and pulling the strings between figma and development.
What's next for BridgeCare 🌉
For better performance we are looking forward to implementing a responsive map for families to easily see the local availability, a responsive messaging platform where families and caretakers can chat, and improved background checks with a 3rd party company.
