As students in Wylie ISD, we have seen how important school communication is for families. Throughout the school year, parents receive emails, notifications, enrollment requirements, transportation updates, and student service information through multiple platforms.
While schools work hard to communicate, understanding that information can still be difficult. Important deadlines, required documents, and action items may be buried inside long messages, creating confusion for families.
We wanted to build a tool that helps families understand school communications while also helping schools identify communication barriers within their communities.
BridgeAI is an AI-powered communication assistant designed specifically for Wylie ISD families.
Users can upload school emails, notices, or district communications. BridgeAI uses document classification, information extraction, translation, and question-answering AI to identify deadlines, required documents, important contacts, and recommended next steps.
The system also provides plain-language summaries, personalized checklists, and multilingual support.
BridgeAI's Community Pulse feature anonymously identifies common questions and communication challenges, helping administrators better understand district-wide needs.
How we built it
We designed BridgeAI as a mobile-first experience using Figma and modern user interface principles. We used Claude's API key to its Haiku Model, Figma Maker heavily developed the app and assisted with design.
The AI workflow includes:
- Document classification
- Information extraction
- Deadline detection
- Urgency analysis
- Plain-language summarization
- Translation support
- Question answering
- Community analytics
The system processes school communications and transforms them into actionable information for families while generating anonymous insights for district administrators.
We filmed for over 8 hours to make a demo video show casing our impact to our school district.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was ensuring that AI supports families without replacing school staff or district decision-making.
We also needed to balance simplicity for parents with enough information to preserve important details from original communications.
Another challenge was designing Community Pulse in a way that protects privacy while still providing meaningful insights to administrators.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that BridgeAI addresses a real problem within our own community.
By focusing specifically on Wylie ISD, we were able to design a solution that is highly relevant to local families, educators, and administrators.
We are also proud of the Community Pulse feature, which expands the impact of BridgeAI beyond individual users and helps improve communication across the entire district.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned that communication is not only about sending information but also about making sure information is understood.
We also learned the importance of responsible AI design, including human oversight, transparency, privacy protection, and clear limitations on AI decision-making.
What's next for BridgeAI
Future versions of BridgeAI could support additional school districts, integrate directly with district communication systems, and provide real-time multilingual assistance.
We also hope to expand Community Pulse to help schools proactively identify communication barriers and improve family engagement across their communities.
BridgeAI demonstrates how AI can strengthen understanding, improve communication, and help schools better support the families they serve.
