Inspiration

We desired to create something human, not another social feed. Each person in each location has stories, abilities, and images of daily life that never cross borders. What inspired us was to create a space where those small, heartfelt interactions are possible, to have links between people who may never connect otherwise.

What it does

BridgeUp lets users submit short cultural vignettes or micro-skills and automatically pair them with someone else's input. Instead of hours of furious scrolling, users see Bridge Cards, two perspectives, side by side. It's a way of learning, connecting, and building empathy in minutes, not hours.

How I built it

  • Using React Native together with Expo as a cross-platform smartphone app.
  • Firebase for auth, Firestore, and media storage.
  • Gemini API to generate lightweight summaries and suggest meaningful tags so matches feel smarter without a heavy backend.
  • A streamlined, contemporary UI consistent with mega social programs, though designed to facilitate fast, low-friction interactions.

Challenges I ran into

  • Balancing minimalism and functionality: a lightweight app yet not insignificant.
  • Matching logic: how to match snapshots in real-time without over-engineering of backend infrastructure.
  • Design: So that the UI looked professional and streamlined, and not too generic.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Developed a completely operable mobile app along with actual user flows under a very tight deadline.
  • Developed a fresh design language that is social, contemporary, and inclusive.
  • Made smooth media capture, upload, and pairing available without a complex backend.

What I learned

  • How to design with restraint: less is better in social apps.
  • Hands-on practice, integration of Expo, Firebase, and Gemini, for rapid iteration.
  • Why user flow is essential: onboard, create to pair, and discover should feel natural.

What's next for Bridge Up

  • Smarter matching by machine learning, so individuals unite based on deeper common interests.
  • Notification when a new Bridge is created. Bridge groups (3+ people together in a joint card).
  • Launch as a progressive web app (PWA) so anyone can sign up in an instant, with no app store friction.
