Inspiration

"Hey Siri, search up coding tutorials on YouTube."
"Here's what I found."

"Hey Google, directions to the nearest Popeye's."
"Here's the fastest route."

"Hey Alexa, shuffle my Spotify playlist."
"Ok, now playing your liked songs."

This is the luxury we enjoy and expect out of the biggest applications on the planet: seemless connections to smart voice assistants and the ability to carry out basic tasks. However, this is not the case for the rest of the 99.9% of apps in the app store.

"Hey Siri, create a new note in Notion"
"Here's what I found on the web for conjunctions."
"... what?"

What it does

BRIDGE is a framework that allows developers and applications who are not fortunate enough to have their APIs built into smart voice assistants to have the same opportunities. BRIDGE enables developers to create their own custom commands that interact with their apps in whichever way they see fit.

How we built it

BRIDGE's developer portal/frontend uses Reactjs, the speech recognition is done by the IBM Watson's Speech-to-Text API hosted on a backend Nodejs server, and commands are analysed and classified by co:here's classification technology. Our demos will be done around the Notion API to demonstrate the difference between Siri and BRIDGE.

Challenges we ran into

This was the first time using Reactjs for 3 out of our 4 members. On top of that, IBM Watson proved to be difficult to work with, even stumping many mentors with their "Internal Server Errors".

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Parts of BRIDGE's technology borrows from a previous React Native hackathon submission that 2 of our members worked on: the speech recognition and classification process. It was a truly triumphant moment when those aspects worked in tandem with eachother, something that was lacking in the former project.

What we learned

APIs make your life so much easier, but so much harder at the same time. Their benefits are tremendous, but the learning curve is also very tough on beginners.

What's next for BRIDGE

BRIDGE cannot truly deliver its promise without the smart voice assistant's integration. Once Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa adopt BRIDGE, it will then actually be easier to create voice commands for app developers.

The ideation process of BRIDGE was something fundamental in the approach of our product. We wanted to create a product that helps the end user in their life to make it more accessible, convenient and safer. We also wanted to create a product that aligns with the HACKTHEVALLEY7 theme which is DISCOVERY. We want to push beyond the status quo and help bridge innovative products to reach new levels
