Inspiration
After seeing the educational gap between students in places with higher poverty rates compared to those with lower ones, we realized that many students below the poverty line do not have access to educational resources. Being high school students ourselves, we understand the importance of learning opportunities and want to help other students who may not have access to these resources. This inspired us to create Bridge.
What it does
Bridge is a non-profit platform that connects students below the poverty line with high school tutors. It allows students to have access to more learning opportunities, while also providing high school students with tutoring experience. Once the user enters our webpage, they can click “Log In'' at the top right corner. They will be brought to a login page, then our tutor or student page. In our tutor page, we have an example of a tutor’s web view. The tutor will be able to see how many students and hours they have already taught and what students are available. At the bottom of the tutor page, there will be further information on benefits and applying as a tutor. The students project is similar.
How we built it
We built Bridge using HTML and CSS. We created 4 different web pages along with a login page.
Challenges we ran into
At first, our webpage was not responsive. All the elements were out of place if our website wasn’t on a specific screen size. We eventually fixed this by changing our font and element sizes from px to vw. Furthermore, we also ran into the challenge of formatting the elements. Ultimately, we fixed this by formatting the website with a CSS grid.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are all so glad that we were able to take part in our first hackathon and are proud of the webpages we were able to make. We had a lot of fun being creative with this website, and are pleased with the fact we were able to make a website that would look good on different screen sizes. We are also very proud of our work ethic, as we worked for many hours without stopping, in order to turn in our project on time.
What we learned
This hackathon taught us a lot of things. It improved our coding skills tremendously, allowing us to code faster. Additionally, we learned to persevere and not give up, as there were many instances where our code wouldn’t work. Lastly, we learned to organize and plan out how we would execute our ideas. This kept us on track to finish our project on time.
What's next for Bridge
Currently, Bridge is a platform that can be used by students in the United States. We hope that in the future, we can open it up to international students and be able to have a wider reach of students.
