Inspiration

My two boys love LEGO. They are always exploring new sets, themes, minifigures, and tiny parts for their next creation. Brickfinder grew out of that simple family moment: making it faster, easier, and more fun to discover LEGO products available from real shops.

What it does

Brickfinder lets people search for LEGO sets and parts across Shopify’s global product catalog. It uses Shopify’s Catalog API through MCP to turn a simple request into relevant products that shoppers can discover and buy from Shopify merchants.

How we built it

I built Brickfinder with Codex, combining AI-assisted development with my experience as a Shopify developer. Shopify’s Catalog API and MCP power product discovery, while the interface keeps the experience visual, playful, and easy to use.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was getting the aesthetics right. LEGO inspires creativity and joy, so Brickfinder needed to feel playful without becoming cluttered. I spent time refining the layout, colors, product cards, and search experience to balance personality with usability.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of the project’s most exciting moments was seeing Brickfinder shared by Shopify leaders Tobi Lütke and Harley Finkelstein. Their recognition gave the project incredible visibility and validated the idea behind it.

What we learned

Building Brickfinder gave me a much deeper understanding of Shopify’s global Catalog API and how MCP can connect conversational product discovery with real commerce data. I also learned how much thoughtful interface design matters when turning a powerful API into an experience people genuinely enjoy using.

What's next for Brickfinder

Next, I want to improve catalog coverage and product matching, support more countries and localized shopping experiences, and make search even more useful for specific sets, themes, minifigures, and individual parts. I would also like to add smarter recommendations so every search can inspire the next build.
