Inspiration
We wanted to make a game that evolved the game of chess beyond things like openings or pattern recognition. BrickChess's card system adds a new spin to chess allowing the game to stay fresh and bring a new challenge to players of all levels of experience.
What it does
BrickChess is game that combines chess and some fundamental ideas behind card battlers. Each game has the players given a hand of cards which apply special effects to the pieces on the board, allowing for players to manipulate the game state in unique and unexpected ways.
How we built it
We built BrickChess in Godot 4, using a a combination of GDScript and C#.
Challenges we ran into
As both of us were completely new to using Godot, we had to spend a lot of time learning to use the game engine and setting up the groundwork for our iteration of chess. Additionally, in the earliest stages of set up, we had some trouble configuring the project which also took some time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of both the idea for a game we had along with the progress we were able to make in reaching that idea in the limited amount of time we had.
What we learned
Making even simple games is a difficult and time consuming process. If we were to make games again in the future, we would be better to do it over a longer period of time to allow for proper development, testing, and bug fixing to make a holistic product.
What's next for BrickChess
We would like to implement more of the ideas we had for cards to flesh out the the feature and make BrickChess truly stand out as its own game.
