Inspiration

The inspiration for NovelGen came from the intersection of two powerful trends: the growing demand for personalized digital content and the accessibility of AI technology. We wanted to create a platform that democratizes novel creation, allowing anyone to generate unique, engaging stories with the help of AI, and then monetize their creations through a seamless e-commerce experience.

Traditional novel writing requires significant time, skill, and resources. With NovelGen, we're breaking down these barriers by leveraging AI to assist in content creation, while providing a complete ecosystem for authors to publish and sell their work directly to readers.

What it does

NovelGen is a full-stack platform that combines AI-powered content generation with an e-commerce solution for digital novels. The platform consists of three main components:

  1. Content Management System (Sanity Studio): A powerful backend where authors can:

    • Generate novel content using AI with customizable parameters (title, genre, word count)
    • Manage their novel catalog (titles, descriptions, cover images, pricing)
    • Track orders and customer information
    • Publish and unpublish novels with ease
  2. AI Generation Engine: Integrated with OpenAI's GPT models to:

    • Generate complete novel content based on user specifications
    • Support multiple genres (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Romance, Mystery, Thriller, Horror, Literary)
    • Automatically format content into structured blocks
    • Calculate word counts and metadata
  3. Public-Facing Storefront: A beautiful, responsive web interface where readers can:

    • Browse available novels with rich previews
    • View detailed novel information and content previews
    • Purchase novels through an intuitive checkout process
    • Experience a modern, user-friendly shopping experience

How we built it

Architecture

  4. Plugin System: Custom Sanity plugin adds "Generate with AI" action to novel documents

Challenges we ran into

  1. Document ID Management: Initially struggled with Sanity's draft vs. published document system. The AI generation plugin needed to handle both draft and published states correctly, requiring careful ID management and fallback logic.

  2. CORS Configuration: Setting up proper CORS for the frontend to access Sanity API required careful configuration in Sanity's project settings. We had to ensure all deployment domains were whitelisted.

  3. API Integration: Integrating OpenAI API while keeping API keys secure was challenging. We implemented environment variables and serverless functions to ensure keys never exposed to the client.

  4. Content Formatting: Converting AI-generated plain text into Sanity's Portable Text format (block structure) required custom parsing logic to maintain proper formatting and structure.

  5. Error Handling: Providing meaningful error messages to users while debugging API issues required comprehensive error handling at multiple layers.

  6. Deployment Complexity: Coordinating deployment of three separate services (Sanity Studio, API server, and frontend) required careful configuration and environment variable management.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Complete End-to-End Solution: We built a fully functional platform from content creation to e-commerce, demonstrating the full product lifecycle.

  2. AI Integration: Successfully integrated OpenAI's GPT-4 into a production-ready workflow, making AI-assisted content creation accessible through a user-friendly interface.

  3. Developer Experience: Created comprehensive documentation, setup guides, and troubleshooting resources to help others understand and extend the platform.

What we learned

  1. Headless CMS Power: Working with Sanity taught us the flexibility and power of headless CMS systems. The ability to structure content exactly how we need it, while maintaining a great authoring experience, was invaluable.

  2. Serverless Architecture: Building with Vercel's serverless functions showed us how to create scalable APIs without managing infrastructure, significantly reducing deployment complexity.

  3. AI Content Generation: Integrating OpenAI API revealed both the potential and limitations of AI-generated content. We learned the importance of human oversight and the value of AI as an assistant rather than a replacement.

  4. Plugin Development: Creating custom Sanity plugins deepened our understanding of React, TypeScript, and the Sanity ecosystem. We learned how to extend existing platforms rather than building everything from scratch.

  5. Error Handling: Building robust error handling across multiple services taught us the importance of clear user feedback and comprehensive logging.
