Inspiration

We both want to design an app to tackle mental health problem among all people all over the world. After chatting with the mentor, we were fortuante to find out how to combine our skills into this idea.

What it does

Upon opening the app, users will be greeted with daily, inspiring quotes in the homepage. Below, users will have access to a personalized tracker that records their daily meditation goals for a healthy mindset.

The second tab of Breathtaking, allows users to navigate links to mental health topics, from articles by psychological experts, health communities, to even the latest research papers regarding mental health! Users can also search for additional topics through our search engine!

The third tab tackles the isolating feelings that individuals often feel. So we implemented a feature that connects users with others who are feeling the same set of emotions. Users can find reassurance that they are not alone, and that there will always be another friend who feels the same.

The final tab of Breathtaking is the settings page, where users are able to adjust their profile, as well as their preferences! Users can also set the level of their mediation goals, and they’ll also be able to see how long they’ve spent on the app!

How we built it

The project was build through various steps. Our group discussion first decided the functionalities of our app, and the main pages of it. Then Zhaoyu learnt basic Xcode skills in building an app through Google or Youtube. The process of learning new code and debugging was long yet worthy. Then Eric made video and slides and wonderful scripts to showcase our project.

Challenges we ran into

We faced a lot of difficulties in implementing the details of the app, such as how to link search to another website or database, how to create registration and login pages. Then we watched many YouTube videos online and learnt that I could use firewall to achieve registration and login process. Even though the time limitation does not allow us to implement them during Rose Hack, we can finish them afterwards. Moreover, we faced question of implementing drop down button. Initially we tried to use the pull down button in Xcode. Then we searched on line and learnt that this function is deprecated and we are suggested to use menu.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of our app, as it had taken us all night to research and implement the code necessary for the app to function. Additionally, we are also very proud of our video presentation, as we combined canva slides, loom recordings, voice recordings, and music through adobe premier.

What we learned

Throughout the whole project, we learnt a lot of functions of Xcode, such as drop down menu, navigational controller, alert box, and so on. Besides these practical skills we gain, we also learnt that it’s great to have another people who want to achieve the same goal as me. If we haven't met each other and made this team, we might give up early and cannot realize that we can create such fantastic app(though not complete) through self-teaching.

We also learnt how to use Canva slides, Loom recordings, music downloaders, and Adobe Premier to a much higher level.

What's next for Breathtaking:

Although only still minimum-viable-product, we hope to continue to scale features into our app! Perhaps in the future, we can integrate calming stories for our users, as well as definitely improving the user experience of our app!
