About the Project - BreatheEasy

Inspiration

The rising concern of air pollution and its direct impact on health inspired us to build BreatheEasy.
We noticed that many people, especially in urban areas, step outside daily without knowing how safe the air is.
We wanted to create a simple and helpful app that empowers users with real-time air quality insights and personalized safety recommendations — helping them make smarter choices for their health and the environment.

What We Learned

Through this project, we deepened our understanding of:

  • How Air Quality Index (AQI) works and what factors like PM2.5, PM10, and NO₂ levels mean for health.
  • How to work with location data and external APIs to fetch live environmental information.
  • The importance of user experience (UX) in delivering critical information quickly and clearly.
  • Ways to design apps that promote social responsibility and personal action against global problems like pollution.

How We Built It

  • Frontend: We designed a clean and intuitive user interface to display the AQI, safety recommendations, weekly trends, and actionable tips.
  • APIs: We integrated a reliable air pollution API to fetch real-time AQI and weather data based on the user's current location.
  • Logic Layer: We built smart logic that analyzes AQI levels and provides dynamic suggestions like whether it's safe to go outside, what precautions to take, and ways to reduce personal pollution contributions.
  • Data Visualization: We used simple graphs to help users view future week's air quality trends at a glance.
  • Notification System (planned): Alert users when air quality suddenly worsens.

Challenges We Faced

  • API Reliability: Finding a free and accurate AQI API with sufficient daily limits was challenging.
  • Location Accuracy: Ensuring the app fetches precise location data without draining device battery or compromising privacy needed careful implementation.
  • Data Interpretation: Translating complex AQI metrics into simple, actionable advice for users of all backgrounds was a tough but rewarding task.
  • User Trust: Since we are dealing with health-related advice, we had to make sure the information is clear, accurate, and responsibly worded.
