Inspiration
I wanted to create a tool that helps people reset—quickly, simply, and anywhere. In a world that constantly demands our attention, breathwork is one of the most accessible ways to regain calm and clarity. BreathEase was built to be that pocket-sized pause: a minimalist breathwork guide for reducing anxiety, improving focus, and cultivating mindfulness.
What it does
BreathEase is a visual and audio-guided breathwork app that helps users slow down and breathe intentionally. Users can:
Choose from preset techniques like box breathing, 4-7-8, or Wim Hof Customize inhale, hold, and exhale durations Follow a pulsing circle for visual guidance Enable calming voice prompts for each breath cycle Set a session duration and begin their practice distraction-free
How we built it
Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
Animations: CSS and JavaScript-based pulsing visuals synced with breath cycles Audio guidance: Text-to-speech or pre-recorded voice files with toggle controls Customization controls: Sliders for breath timing, dropdowns for technique selection PWA setup: Installable on mobile devices with offline support for accessibility anywhere
Challenges we ran into
Visual balance: Making the animation calming yet noticeable without being distracting was more nuanced than expected.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a fully functioning breathwork app in a short timeframe Created a relaxing, accessible UI with intuitive controls Seamlessly integrated visuals and audio guidance Made the app offline-capable and mobile-first
What we learned
Customization enhances usability—people breathe differently, and flexibility matters
What's next for BreathEase
Track breathing session history and streaks Offer user profiles for saving preferred settings Add a daily reminder feature Integrate science-backed breathing goals (e.g., HRV improvement or anxiety reduction plans)
