Inspiration
An app concept that addresses the disparity that at risk breast cancer patients face while attempting to find screening sites near them while also answering common questions competently - all without a copay.
What it does
Our motivation was to decrease the barriers that some women face while attempting to find screenings or information in regard to breast cancer. A user is able to search screening locations near them, find their contact information, set appointment reminders, and also read through a list of common questions that are answered competently.
How we built it
Front End - React.js, React Bootstrap API - React-Google-Maps/API
Challenges we ran into
It was exciting, rewarding and challenging to use react-router-dom to route across the app using links which was a method of routing we hadn’t done before. It was challenging because documentation didn’t provide a step by step guide on this method. It was also challenging integrating Google Maps API to the front end.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A user downloads this app and inputs their zip code which then locates their nearest screening center and outputs their location and contact information. The users are also able to browse through common questions they may have about the disease as well as schedule an appointment reminder.
What we learned
We learned about react-router-dom link, react-google-maps/api and teamwork!
What's next for Breast Check
In the future we could increase scalability by adding features such as connecting users with breast cancer support groups near them, connecting users to fundraising events in their area and we could increase accessibility by providing users access within a browser, app and even including tablets including the app in spaces at the grocery store or pharmacy where there are blood pressure readings and scales available already.
