Inspiration
Mental abuse is often invisible but deeply damaging. Many people—especially teens and young adults—struggle to recognize toxic patterns in relationships or know how to respond. We wanted to create an engaging, emotionally-resonant experience that educates users on identifying and handling emotionally manipulative or abusive situations. That’s how BreakPoint was born: a simulation game that helps users build emotional resilience and awareness through realistic scenarios so they know what to look out for and they can prevent themselves from being mentally abused or stressed when faced with such a scenario.
What it does
BreakPoint is a mobile app that simulates emotionally intense or manipulative conversations in a WhatsApp-style chat interface. Users navigate these simulated chats by choosing how to respond to a series of messages from an AI-driven character. The game provides real-time feedback and insights into each decision, helping users recognize red flags, assert boundaries, and build emotional intelligence. It’s not just a game—it’s a guided experience to help people develop healthier relationship skills.
How we built it
We built BreakPoint using React Native for cross-platform mobile development. For the AI-driven responses and dynamic conversations, we integrated natural language processing models to generate context-aware dialogue and feedback. The storyline logic is built using a branching dialogue tree system, allowing user choices to shape how the story progresses. We also implemented Firebase for backend data storage and analytics to track user progress and game choices.
Challenges we ran into
The hardships we faced during this hackathon were mostly related to mobile app development as we were struggling to implement an app for IOS and Android and Integrating the AI in a way that feels both natural and educational was tricky as well, especially ensuring the feedback was both helpful and sensitive to the user’s situation.
While app integration was hard we also had to make sure this app was actually useful and won't just be a bunch of random features cluttered together and so we had to design a UI that feels safe and welcoming for young users while remaining functional was a major design challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created a fun interactive game with many features
Designed and wrote realistic, multi-layered conversation scenarios with in depth-analysis
Built a user-friendly UI that mirrors familiar chat apps
Implemented a Safe feature that disguises the app like a calculator
What we learned
How to apply AI in emotional contexts
The power of storytelling in tech for social impact
How to balance game mechanics with meaningful learning outcomes
What's next for BreakPoint
Add more diverse storylines covering different types of mental abuse (e.g., gaslighting, guilt-tripping, stonewalling)
Implement personalized feedback with more advanced sentiment analysis
Create more fun mini games with high score and points tracking
Implement a voice feature to allow you to create speech scenarios
