Inspiration
We were inspired by recent rogue-like games that take a classic game and remix it with more modern elements.
What it does
The game is a breakout clone with the twist of after each round you have to make a deal with the devil. Each deal gives you one benefit (e.g. another ball) and one drawback (e.g. the blocks are harder to break).
How we built it
We used the Pico 8 game engine and the Lua programming language.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the collision physics of the ball to work and feel satisfying took up the bulk of our time. Designing balanced "deals" was another challenge to keep the game fun and engaging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The game feels very satisfying to play when you get a good run and we are very pleased with the card animations.
What we learned
We learned a lot about how to balance a game correctly
What's next for Breakout with the Devil
We plan to add a main menu, more cards, a high score system, sound effects and to clean up the codebase so it is easier to iterate on
