Breakout
Category - Miscellaneous (Multiplatform - iOS and Web) Web application provides functionality to explore events around a user using a dual view design. First, integrated Google Maps API can be used to explore nearby events using a map which pinpoint user's current location and the user has the ability to a draw a circumference of custom radius around himself to get a good estimate of the distance of the event. Second, is the normal list view that lists all the events in a table. Both views provides features to make an entry of the event on the calendar. The iOS app borrows the idea of approval and disapproval from the app Tinder. You get random flyer or event data from our Parse backend. Swiping right leads to an entry in the Calendar whereas swiping left ignores it. The mobile app also has the list view.
Inspiration
We believe that we live in times where the idea of having flyers and formal printed invitation and announcements is too archaic and our Computer Science Building at Purdue is full of notice boards and a lot of flyers. We want their use to be discontinued in near future.
What it does
Breakout is a dedicated application for exploring your nearby events, parties, get togethers or getting to know about any announcements. Our mission is to give the user a variety of tools to go out - Explore, Plan and Break Free!
Why is it useful
We believe that the users can use our tools and be more explorative, adventurous and outgoing than being stuck to their phone forever. Thus, significantly uprooting the upcoming concepts of the younger generation growing a level of addiction for their mobile phones and gadgets. Also it saves a lot of paper which goes in printing event information and distributing that among a lot of people. Saves trees. Saves us.
How We built it
We built our application over two platforms from scratch. The web application leverages features of the AngularJS web framework and Twitter Bootstrap template designing tools. We used Parse.com as our backend. The iOS made use of Swift.
