Inspiration 💌

The biggest reason there is a lack of effective communication between children and parents is because children feel that parents don’t understand them. Eight in ten parents say they feel like their child avoids having conversations with them. Sharing a common language and vocabulary allows people to be understood, reduces anxiety and helps you feel heard. Poor communication is negatively affecting our children. We wanted to break the communication barrier between parents and children, and ensure positive relationships.

What it does 💪

Breaking Booomer Barriers integrates with WhatsApp and helps to define the latest "modern day GenZ slang" and acronyms so that parents can understand what their child is saying and respond without sounding like Shakespeare.

Simply forward text messages from your child to the Breaking Boomer Barriers phone number and receive a translated version of the messages. You can also use audio to record what your child is saying and covert it to Boomer English.

How we built it 👩‍💻

We used Twilio to send and receive messages from Whatsapp. Once the code has recieved message content, the conversation is stored in the Postgre database and our OpenAI model will read the text and send a reply to your Whatsapp number.

Challenges we ran into 💀

We have never coded an AI project chatbot before. We encountered many problems such as integrating our code with WhatsApp to make it more accessible to parents. We also had many difficulties downloading and using the postgreSQL database and converting audio to text.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 💅

We overcame most of our challenges and successfully built the Boomer Chatbot. We are extremely proud of what it can do and hope to help improve family communication.

We learned how to use many different APIs
We learned a lot from the workshops such as 3d modelling, Python and AI which helped us with our project.
Our code had a lot of errors and we learned how to be resourceful and how to debug
