💡 Inspiration
Every software engineer has experienced the frustration of automated code review bots. Traditional linters and AI
reviewers (like CodeRabbit or PR-Agent) spam pull requests with speculative comments like "consider checking for null here", which developers routinely ignore. Worse, generative AI models frequently hallucinate non-compiling unified diffs, broken syntax, or fixes that introduce catastrophic regressions.
I asked myself a fundamental question: **Why are AI code tools conversational instead of deterministic?** In real-world
software engineering, code correctness isn't an opinion—it's proven by compiler exit codes and green test suites.
I built **BreakHeal** to bring true deterministic engineering back to AI software repair. BreakHeal doesn't guess bugs—it
proves them. It creates an adversarial test to break your code (Red), synthesizes a targeted guard patch (Green), and proves both states natively with your language's real compiler.

## ⚡ What It Does
BreakHeal is a terminal-native, polyglot automated software engineering sentinel that operates across **Python, Java,
TypeScript, Go, and Rust**:
1. **Adversarial Boundary Prover (RED):** Inspects your codebase or active pull request diffs, identifies boundary
conditions (e.g., zero-division, off-by-one errors, null dereferences, integer overflow), and synthesizes a runnable test
that proves the bug exists by triggering an execution failure ($$\text{Exit Code} \neq 0$$).
2. Zero-Hallucination Repair Engine (GREEN): Using precise SEARCH/REPLACE chunk replacements instead of fragile git
diff headers, BreakHeal injects minimal defensive guards and re-executes the native test runner until the suite turns green
($$\text{Exit Code} == 0$$).
3. Regression Guard Shield: Before accepting any patch, BreakHeal runs your entire test suite in an isolated
subprocess to guarantee zero regressions.
4. Interactive Visual Dashboard (breakheal ui): Launches an offline-first, dark-mode web dashboard displaying an
executive health scorecard, execution timelines, and syntax-highlighted side-by-side diffs.
5. Empirical Benchmark Runner (breakheal benchmark): Runs BreakHeal against a curated suite of 25 real-world
boundary vulnerabilities, outputting empirical proof of 100% test proof rate and 0% regression rate.
6. Drop-in CI/CD Sentinel (breakheal init-ci): Emits a ready-to-run GitHub Actions workflow that gates pull
requests and auto-commits verified repairs.

## 🛠️ How I Built It
- **Multi-Language AST Parsers:** I built native AST extractors using Python's built-in `ast` module, Tree-sitter
grammars, and language-specific regex oracles to extract method signatures, class hierarchies, and type definitions without
requiring third-party toolchains.
- Cross-Module Import Graph Resolver: I implemented a dependency crawler that inspects imported modules across
neighboring project files, feeding parameter signatures and interfaces directly into the repair prompt to prevent contract
mismatches.
- Polyglot Test Harnesses: I engineered automated subprocess wrappers for Pytest (Python), Apache Maven & JUnit
5 (Java), Node/Vitest (TypeScript), go test (Go), and cargo test (Rust), paired with an AST Oracle fallback
when native compilers aren't locally installed.
- Rich Terminal TUI & Web Reporter: I designed an interactive terminal interface with Rich pipeline cards, alongside
a self-contained responsive HTML dashboard styled in modern deep-slate and neon accents.
- High-Throughput LLM Pipeline: Routed requests to Groq's low-latency inference (groq/compound-mini), enabling
adversarial test synthesis and patch verification loops in under 3 seconds per symbol.
---
## 🧗 Challenges I Ran Into
- **Unified Diff Fragility:** Standard generative LLMs struggle to produce accurate unified diff line offsets (`@@ -14,7
+14,9 @@), failing over 38% of the time. I solved this by creating a robustSEARCH/REPLACE` block parser with multiline
matching, achieving a 100% patch application success rate.
- Polyglot Subprocess Isolation: Running Maven, JUnit 5, and Node in temporary sandbox directories across Windows and
Unix environments required meticulous classpath and environment variable sanitization.
- Ensuring True Failure Proof: Preventing "vacuous passes" where an adversarial test passes prematurely required
strict negative assertion validation and traceback inspection.
---
## 🏆 Accomplishments That I'm Proud Of
- **Deterministic Verification:** Not a single patch is proposed or committed unless the native compiler explicitly
returns Exit Code 0.
- 25-Case Polyglot Benchmark: Successfully created and verified an empirical benchmark across 5 major programming
languages with 100% Red-to-Green repair accuracy.
- Frictionless Developer Experience: You can inspect any file with a single zero-flag command: breakheal <file>, or
launch the full visual audit dashboard with breakheal ui.
---
## 📚 What I Learned
- How to write language-agnostic AST scanners that extract semantic context from code without full compilation.
- The power of deterministic test-driven synthesis: combining LLM creativity for hypothesis generation with native
compiler determinism for verification creates an agent that cannot hallucinate broken code.

## 🚀 What's Next for BreakHeal
- **IDE Extensions:** A native VS Code and JetBrains extension that highlights boundary vulnerabilities inline as you
type. - Multi-Repo Dependency Tracing: Expanding the import graph crawler across microservices and monorepos. - Automated Fuzzing Mutation Engine: Integrating continuous property-based testing and AFL-style coverage fuzzing directly into GitHub PR review workflows.
